Lesson Six ^^

Hi there…
There are two types of adjectives in Japanese 1) i-adjectives 2) na-adjectives. This is how you use i-adjectives and na-adjectives.

1) i-adj+noun
Ōkii uchi         à big house

2) na-adj+noun
Kirei na uchi    à beautiful house

Dialogue 1

Mika    : Sarah san no otōsan wa donna hito desu ka. What kind of person is your father?
Sarah   : Kibishii hito desu ga, shinsetsu desu. He’s strict but a kind person.
Mika    : Okāsan wa? (How about) your mother?
Sarah   : Haha mo onaji desu. My mother also the same.

Notes: “Haha” is referring to one’s own mother, meanwhile “okāsan” is referring to other people’s mother. Same goes to “chichi” for one’s own father and “otōsan” is for other people’s father.


Questions and answers
  1. Anata no otōsan wa donna hito desu ka. What kind of person is your father?
à Kibishii hito desu. A strict person.

  1. Anata no kareshi wa donna hito desu ka. What kind of person is your boyfriend?
à Hansamu na hito desu. A handsome person.

  1. Anata no uchi wa donna uchi desu ka. What kind of house is your house?
à Chiisai uchi desu. A small house.

  1. Tokyo wa donna toshi desu ka. What kind of city is Tokyo?
à Ōkii toshi desu. A big city.

  1. Nihon ryōri wa dō desu ka. How’s Japanese food?
à Oishii desu. Delicious.
